Municipal Government

The Greenup Village Board, composed of six trustees and a village president, serve as the administrative authority for the Greenup municipal government.

The Village of Greenup employs a police force of 4 full-time officers and is afforded fire protection services through the volunteer efforts of the Greenup Fire Protection District. The Village is currently classified with a fire insurance rating of 5.

Emergency medical care is available 24 hours a day through Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Center (a regional hospital) located 24 miles northwest of Greenup, also by St Anthony's Memorial Hospital located 26 miles west in Effingham, Illinois.. The Village’s medical needs are also served through the Greenup Clinic, which provides modern medical diagnostic testing and routine medical care for village residents. Emergency medical ambulance transportation is provided by the Greenup Ambulance Service.

Community Facilities

Greenup, a community strongly tied to the historical and cultural growth of central Illinois, is situated at the heart of the historic National Trail (recently designated a National Scenic Byway).

Greenup features two motels with a total of 59 guest rooms available. The community can accommodate large private social functions with the largest banquet hall having a capacity of 250 persons.

The First Neighbor Bank is capable of assisting in any development projects requiring capital investment. The local, employee owned banking institution has assets in excess of $185,000,000.

The Greenup Press, a locally owned newspaper, is published weekly and features news and sports coverage of interest to area residents.

The Village of Greenup is home to a vibrant religious community with five local churches, including Catholic, Protestant, Baptist, Methodist and other non-denominational Christian faiths.

The Village of Greenup provides a variety of recreational facilities; including a driving range and public parks with tennis and basketball courts. The public also enjoys access to nearby country clubs as well as several area lakes with swimming, boating and water sports. For the avid outdoors person, nearby Fox Ridge and Lincoln Trail State Parks offer camping, hiking, snowmobiling, walking paths and horseback riding.  Lincoln Trail Motosports, located on Rt 40 east of Greenup, has weekend motocross racing as well as several weekends of other off-road events.

The Greenup Library, located in downtown Greenup, affords residents with access to the latest multi-media resource materials, computers and technical services.

 

Education

Lake Land College , located only 20 miles northwest of the Village of Greenup , offers access to high quality, low cost higher education and workforce training programs.

Eastern Illinois University in Charleston (20 miles north-west) provides students access to educational programs leading to bachelor and masters degrees in a variety of academic programs.
